Mounted photo of the town of Independence captioned in pencil below: "Independence Cal. 1873 from South. By Addis."
Handwritten in pencil on reverse: [Illegible] children born there [illegible]. Henry Levy home in 1874 [where?] Independence Hotel now stands. Levy Restaurant and Saloon [illegible]. Harris and Rhine General Merchandise (Pine's Café and Post Office). Building with cupola second courthouse. Building with stove pipe old Masonic Temple. Small building standing [illegible] belonged to Dr. Blair drugstore (Marvelle Schabbell's step grandfather). Large building on left Mairs rooming house where French Inn now stands (Pete Mairs' father).
An old interpretative label says: Independence, California. Photo by A. S. Addis about 1873. Looking north on Edwards Street. First house on right Henry Levy home, where Independence Hotel now stands [Austin's Store as of the 1990s]. Second building Levy Restaurant and Saloon. Large building with sign was Harris and Rhine. This building was destroyed by fire in 1886 but a second was built in the same architecture and now houses Pines Café. The cupola of the second courthouse shows in the distance. The location of this courthouse was just north of the Blaney House, and on the site of the present courthouse. (Here Market Street runs east and west and crosses Edwards Street.) Building on northeast corner was first Rothschild Store. North was the Blaney House. One of the buildings was Mrs. Nicholl's Boarding House. The small building which stands out a little was Dr. Blair's Drug Store. The building with the bent chimney was the old Masonic Hall. The large building across the street on the left was Mairs' Rooming House.Photograph Details
