Description

Photo of two boys, Dick and Bob, the sons of Elizabeth Mecham, posing on one of the old stagecoaches at Indian George's place at Warm Springs. Handwritten in blue ink on reverse: Old Johannesburg "Joburg" and Ballarat stage--6 horse teams, taken June 2, 1931 at Indian George Hanson winter home--"Warm Springs"--Panamint Valley--now called "Indian Reservation." The old stage was left in his care from 1910 on. On drivers seat Bob Mecham--on rear seat Dick Mecham--canvas side curtains rolled up and down. This photo was included with letter 1955.912.59a and was mentioned in letter 1955.912.58, in which she writes: Cheesebrough gave a couple of the stages to Indian George to care for and were at his place at Warm Springs for years gradually falling to pieces after he died. He took good care of them and in 1931 we stopped to see him--my sons and I and a couple of friends--and I took a picture of the boys on the old stage. In letter 1955.912.59a she writes: Enclosed in a picture of Johannesburg "Joburg" stage and Ballarat taken June 2, 1931--taken at Indian George Hanson and families winter home "Warm Springs" Panamint Valley, now called Indian Reservation. When Cheesebrough's contract to carry mail on his stages from Ballarat to "Joburg" ended 1910 he gave the stage to George to care for and he did until his death Sept. 18, 1943. This photo is included in 1999.27.1.
