Photo of a group of people gathered in front of a store with several burros.
A photocopied paper written by Elizabeth Mecham says: Dec. 12, 1915. Mattie again and Ted. Mr. Snyder miner, Martin, John Kelly center, George Gregory on porch, Heitman and miner going with Kelly. Shows bare locust trees in front of Etcharren house, built by McClouds 1870s and where second fire started at 2 P.M., Sunday July 7, 1918. Etcharrens had remodeled and added to the house and installed pressure gas plant for lighting with pipe in attic. The vents at each end had not been open so the gas fumes accumulated and blew up filling the entire house in a mass of flames. We never got inside. Domingo and Mattie were sitting on the front porch--flames shot out the door and burned one side of her hair. Ted was playing in back yard, we saved what we could out of Mamie's and the store--then it went and the hotel and on up the street--2 blocks in all of original buildings. SIlas Reynolds had died Dec. 31, 1917--Mamie was also Post Master--we did save the books, etc.
There are two versions of this photo--the first (1955.912.87a) is vertical with Elizabeth Mecham's notes on the reverse. The second (1955.912.87b) is horizontal and doesn't cut off Mattie Etcharren on the left side.Collection
