Photo of the town of Darwin before the fires of 1917 and 1918. Handwritten in blue ink on reverse: Darwin, Calif., 1914, before fires (August 17) 1917-1918. On right original barn 1876--street--then Black Metal Saloon. Henry Heitman's locust trees in front, built early days--then Peterson's [Petersen?] property and Alex Rouna's house00tent on left. Long's (original McCloud's) Etcharren's where 2nd fire started by explosion July 7, 1918. Reynolds store--(street) and front of hotel, original, then Mrs. Loughrey's restaurant and tamarisk tree in front of Frank Carthery's, original property, store of Defiance Mine 1875-6, old school doesn't show. There is another copy (1955.912.32b) of this photo from Elizabeth Mecham that has different notes written on the reverse.
