Description

Photo of a group of people gathered in front of a store with several burros. Handwritten in blue ink on reverse: The McCloud home built 1875 and bought 1905 by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Long and this is where the July 7, 1918 fire started and burned 2 blocks (see pictures). At left Silas Reynolds, Mrs. Long Etcharren, Theodore "Ted" 3 yrs. old, miner's head, Martine Etcheverry, Henry Heitman on jack [burro], John Kelly in back and George Gregory Indian on porch. Dec. 12, 1915. Kelly came each year from San Francisco to do assessment work at Modoc for the Hearst Examiner Publishers--Pheobe and William, owners. In front of original Charlie Anthony store 1876. "Jacks" all packed and ready to head for Modoc--Kelly was a lively Irishman and we all enjoyed his trips each winter. A photocopied paper written by Elizabeth Mecham says: Dec. 12, 1915. John Kelly and pack burros leavingfor Modoc to do assessment work for Hearst. He came down from San Francisco each year to do the work. Then assessment had to be done by Jan 1st. Later years changed to July after World War I. On left Silas Reynolds, Mrs. Etcharren and Ted, 3 yrs. old on jack, miner Mr. Snyder head and hat behind him, Then Martin Etcheverry--Domingo's nephew. Henry Heitman on jack and John Kelly just behind. On porch George Gregory (Indian). All the town about 25 of us always gave Kelly a send off, a great Irishman, a warm day, Darwin's "perfect" climate. There are two versions of this photo--the first (1955.912.89a) is vertical with Elizabeth Mecham's notes on the reverse. The second (1955.912.89b) is horizontal and doesn't cut off a packed burro on the right side.
