Photo of a group of four children sitting on the steps in front of one of the buildings in Darwin. One of them appears to be holding a bow and arrow. There is what appears to be a vehicle being pulled by a team of two horses down the street.
A photocopied paper written by Elizabeth Mecham says: How we started cars in 1916. Shows fence and corner of our house where our son was born--it is next to Black Metal Saloon--owned by Jack Gunn at that time--country was dry but Darwin had "local option"--next shows the Jack Gunn 1876 saloon. Behind car and team is old horse trough before Peterson [Petersen?] built--shows his tent, then Alex Rouna house built 1915 and Al and Vie Belen lived there. He tended bar for Gunn. On left shows steps and front porch of original hotel--Charlie Anthony's--also owned the store and barns and corrals--sold all to SIlas Reynolds and Domingo Etcharen 1904-5. Boys on step--little Alex Rouna, Wallace Campbell, Jimmy Cathery--he and Alex Indian boys--then Josephine Loughrey. A small bit of the top of tamarisk trees in front of Cathery's and fence around them--still growing! 1876. The 2 blocks on right burned down Aug. 17, 1917 and 2 blocks on left burned July 7, 1918.
There is another copy (1955.912.32g) of this photo from Elizabeth Mecham that has different notes written on the reverse.Collection
