Photo of a row of stores or buildings along a street in Darwin. There is a burro in front of them near the center. One of the buildings has a sign that says, "Post Office."
A photocopied paper written by Elizabeth Mecham says: 1916. Upper corner of old hotel--then Mrs. Loughrey's restaurant and rooms--originally restaurant and saloon 1870s--then the tamarisk tree by Frank Catherey's home (now Out Post) and it was a store in old days--old cellar was on corner lot. Jennie (Jean) Catherey's room is behind the fence--beautiful old mahogany marble top furniture brought in for Defiance Mine--original claim--all burned in 1918 fire--for years Frank Carthery was caretaker of Defiance property--smelter, pipeline and water--and soon it was a constant fight to get water! We kids used to go out on the line with him on Saturdays and he wrapped the leaks in original 4" rivited pipe--with canvas and bailing wire--the came the Model T and inner tubes and bailing wire.
There are two versions of this photo--the first (1955.912.95a) has Elizabeth Mecham's notes on the reverse. The second (1955.912.95b) isn't cropped and shows more of the street scene on both the left and right sides of the photo.Collection
