Photo of a man crossing a dirt street in Darwin with the Black Metal Saloon behind him.
Written in red ink on reverse: Jack [crossed out and replaced with "Jim"] Burns heading for the store 1916--good view of Black Metal Saloon. Charles Long's house--fence in front--where Aug. 17, 1917 fire started burned the 2 blocks--Mt. "Ioke" in background--part of Jack Gunn's original saloon 1876. School children in the 1880s named "Mt. Ioke" after a little Chinese girl "Ioke" who they would chase up the hill.
A photocopied paper written by Elizabeth Mecham says: 1915. Jim Burns heading for store from Black Metal Saloon, house where Dick was born and our little 2 room house--then Jack Gunn's old saloon 1876. Crossing [Crossin?] place now on corner. The house next to Black Metal is where first fire started Aug. 17, 1917 and burned 2 blocks. "Mt. Ioke" in background, named after a little Chinese girl the other kids would chase up the hill in 1800s.Collection
