Description

Redwood replica of the original Manzanar entrance sign. It says Manzanar War Relocation Center. Designed by Hiromi Saito, NHK TV Production, Tokyo, Japan and built by Rene Veluzat of Newhall, CA for the NHK filming of scenes from the TV story of "The Two Motherland." Old label says: The original sign which was located at the main entrance to the camp was lost or destroyed during the razing operation of the camp's closure, December 1945. Today the poles that held the sign stand forlornly like ghostly sentries guarding the entrance to the former site of the temporary residence of over 10,000 U.S. citizens and their parents. Recently the NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Corporation) reconstructed the sign to be used in a scene depicting the forced evacuation and entry into camp of a convoy of army trucks and buses loaded with evacuees. The scenes were successfully filmed with the cooperation of the Caltrans Department and the California Highway Patrol. The sign has been placed in the care of the Manzanar Project on temporary loan to the museum by Sota Yamamoto, Hiromi Saito, and Shi Nomura.
