Color photograph of the three panels of the mural painted on wallboard that was rescued from the demolition of Manzanar Mess Hall 16, taken on the porch of a storage building at the Eastern California Museum. The mural was created by Mr. Henry Masasuke Kumano of Block 19. The mural depicts the life story of Benkei and Ushiwakamaru.
The following information is written on two yellow sticky note labels next to the photo:
Ushiwakamaru and Benkei: Benkei, unable to collect his 1,000th sword from the 12 year old Ushiwakamaru. He gave up and became Ushiwakamaru's #1 samurai when Ushiwakamaru became a Shogun known as Yoshitune Minamoto.
Mural painting on the plasterboards that lined the barrack apartments in the Manzanar Camp. Was collected by Jerome Thornton of Oak Creek, north of Independence. The artwork was in his possession for 40 years and was thoughtfully presented to the Manzanar Project at the Eastern California Museum in Independence, CA.Photograph Details
