Description

Copy of a photo of a train accident about five miles north or Cartago at Ash Creek (around 17 miles south of Lone Pine). It was printed in June 1968, but the original photo dates to around 11/26/1926. Information from Claude Drew: Heavy rain storm for about four days. Morning after Thanksgiving 1926 approximately 7AM filled aqueduct up. Luke McCoy there on horse about five miles to Cottonwood Gate to phone. Mr. Claude Drew headed on foot to Ashwood Creek to flag the train but didn't make it in time. Could see track washed out but couldn't get to train in time. Washed out 700-800 feet of aqueduct. Killed engineer (maybe). The Big Pine Citizen December 4, 1926 issue ran an article on the event in which it confirms that Engineer Charles A. Fuller was killed in the accident.
