Description

B/w photo of four men in foreground shoveling salt, large piles of salt, and three more people and mountains in the background. Label says: "Salt crystals were shoveled into conical piles about two feet high and three and a half feet in diameter. Each pile contained from 400 to 500 pounds of salt. The salt remained in piles until the brine had nearly drained. This was part of a purification process. The brine contained the majority of the impurities and these were carried away as the brine drained. Each man was expected to pile from eight to ten tons of salt per day."
