The photograph was taken outside the gates at Manzanar on November 18, 1943. A War Relocaiton Authority station wagon is leaving Manzanar Incarceration Camp en route to Reno, NV, the car is driving between the military police stationed at the gate. A sign can be seen with a 20 mph speed limit, and "Stop Military Police". Incarcerees can be seen waving farewell on the left side, with a line of administrative buildings behind them. "Here is a War Relocation Authority station wagon crowded with Japanese heading for the Nevada line and complete freedom, passing through a military police sentry line at Manzanar on November 18, 1943. Once in Nevada, the evacuees will board trains and buses for the midwest and east, where they have been offered jobs."
