Description

Workmen and a car of that era illustrate the size of syphon section. Two men are standing beside an early vehicle parked inside of a section of siphon pipe. There is a third man driving the vehicle. In the background are several tent cabins (aqueduct construction camp). Stamped in black ink on reverse with the Dept. of Water & Power stamp and photograph/negative number 500. "The final task was the installation of inverted siphons--the great airtight pipes by which the water would be made to drop into and out of canyons below the aqueduct grade level...Most siphons were made of thick steel sections, rolled and punched at eastern mills and shipped by rail to be riveted in the field." --from Water Seekers, by Nadeau, pg. 45
