Campaign hat that belonged to Norman Clyde, famous mountaineer. He was born on April 8, 1885 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died on December 23, 1972 at the Big Pine Sanatorium. Norman Clyde gave this hat to Elodie and Claude Drew of Independence.
It is 13 3/4" across, brown, well-worn. Looks like resin, glue, or pitch put on hat to mend it. Cord on to keep hat on head. Has unreadable label in band. Top of hat cracked and has been repaired with varnish-like material. Cotton cord, four rivet holes in crown, two rivet holes for cord, one rivet hole at edge of rim center back. Hat's leather interior band is brittle, cracked, very dirty. Wool felt hard and brittle. Extreme wear, dirty. Crown is cracked and covered with some sort of glue. Front edge of brim on left side shows extreme darkening from dirt and hand oils where Norman took it off and on.Collection
