Description

Panorama photo of Bodie with cemetery in the foreground and small patches of snow around the buildings. Small tears in top left of photo and left side of photo. Handwritten in black ink on reverse: Bodie, California--a big gold producer in the 80s. The expression 'The Bad Man From Bodie' was symbolic of this camp where numerous killings took place. It had a large Chinatown with opium dens and Joss House, at one time three daily newspapers, was plagued by fires and winters of heavy snows, played a part in Wells Fargo stage coach robberies and whose history is well covered in Ella Cain's 'Story of Bodie.' The original discovered (Bodey) perished in a snow storm before the camp developed. Bodie is now a California State Park, so established through the efforts of State Senator Charles Brown whose name is revered by citizens of Inyo and Mono Counties. Picture is believed taken in the early part of the century, after the heyday of the town." Stamped on reverse with "Property of C. Lorin Ray."
