A662.1Description
Mounted photo of L. Wood's General Merchandise store with a large group of people, mostly men and children, standing on the front porch. A scale is visible on the porch, along with a picket fence, some young trees, a hitching post, and other buildings in the background.
The photo and mount both are somewhat damaged from glue, tape, and some tears (mostly in the top left and right corners, but also on the bottom center as well).
Information from the accession paperwork identifies this as the first Wood's store in Independence, dating around 1886. It stood where the new justice building is under construction (as of 1957) on the corner of Market and Edwards Streets. The fourth adult from the left is George Woods, the 5th adult from the left is John Lank, the 3rd adult from John Lank is L. Woods, Proprietor. George Brady (Brundy?) is in front.
