A896.2Description
Mounted bust-length studio portrait of a woman. She is identified on the reverse as Mary Adams McCall of Lone Pine, CA.
Old label says: Mary Adams McCall, mother of Cordelia Adams Johnson Anton. The McCall Ranch was on the southwest side of Lone PIne close to Tuttle Creek. The McCalls were an early Lone Pine family.
The accession information states that she was the wife of J. C. Anton and the mother of Cordelia Adams Johnson Anton, however information received from Stephen Landuyt via email in May 2022 pointed out that Cordelia was married to J. C. Anton, not Mary: My ancestors were among the early settlers in Lone Pine. One of my ancestors is Mary Adams McCall. The photo description erroneously reads, "She was the wife of J. C. Anton..." however, it was Mary's daughter Cordelia who was married to J.C. Anton, and not Mary. Mary Adams McCall was married to John J. McCall, who was her second husband. They lived outside of Lone Pine and are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery. Mary Adams McCall came to Lone Pine in about 1870 or 1871 with her two daughters (Cordelia and Ida Adams) from her first marriage to Frederick C. Adams who had died in San Francisco in 1862. John J. McCall died in 1875 and Mary Adams McCall did not remarry. In Lone Pine, daughter Cordelia Adams was first married to Albert H. Johnson, one of the town's founders buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, and following Mr. Johnson's death, Cordelia married J.C. Anton. Cordelia and Mr. Anton are buried in the Mt. Whitney Cemetery.Collection
