Description

Large grey sign shaped like a little house with overhanging roof. Most of the lettering has faded away (it had been painted black), but it is still faintly legible. "Indiana Summit In Honor of Indiana Automobile Manufacturer Association Tour." There is a circular logo at the top that says, "Inyo Good Road Club / El Camino Sierra." It looks like a date was included, but only "19--" remains visible. Above the logo is a line that says, "See America First." Lots of graffiti on front and back from travellers signing their names, dates, and times. These include: Mitt J. Sepsey (1942-1944), Ben William (1933), Joan D--, Frank Mathieu, J. C. (1936), E. H. Schils of L.A. (1936), B. W. (1933), E. W. (1933), Ed Washington (1939), J. E. Brooks, T. C. (1938), H + J / L + K (1925), Harry Kelly, etc. Two metal straps on the reverse to anchor to post. There are a few (bullet?) holes, which have surrounding rust spots. Also some damage/holes to "roof" of sign. Information from accession paperwork: Erected in June 1913 at the time a caravan consisting of 22 cars and 63 people and known as the "Hoosier Tour" crossed Westgard Pass on their way from Indianapolis to San Francisco. The tour was a booster trip for the Midland Trail, and was sponsored by the Indiana Auto Mfg. Assn. Among the celebrities in the party were A. L. Westgard, for whom Westgard Pass was named, Elwood Haynes, famous auto manufacturer, Chas. A. Bookwalter, ex-mayor of Indianapolis, Carl Fisher, W. McKay White, Chairman of the tour, and W. Gillette Scott, Secretary of Inyo Good Road Club. The Sequoia now growing at the intersection of the Goldfield Highway and U.S. #6 one mile north of Big Pine was planted with ceremony at the same time.
