Description

Photo of a Fremont cannon on display. Label says: "Captain John Fremont and his exploring party, bound for Oregon and California with Kit Carson as guide, left St. Louis in the spring of 1843. They were armed with carbines and this 12 lb. brass cannon. It is the type invented by the French for mountain fighting in early wars in Algiers. On January 29, 1844, facing the rugged, snow-capped Sierras, Fremont was forced to abandon the cannon on the present Nevada-California border near the Alpine-Mono County line. Found years later, the cannon stood at Glenbrook, Lake Tahoe for a time, then was presented to the Nevada State Museum."
