Description

"Children Sing in the Far West" is inscribed and autographed. It says, "To Franklin Hittel from Mary Austin. The land we loved so well." Franklin Hittell was the son of Theodore Hittell, the historian of California. Mary Austin was staying in their home in San Francisco when the great earthquake of 1906 struck. These poems were written during the time Mary Austin taught school in Lone Pine. There is a poem cut out of a newspaper or magazine and affixed to the back flyleaf that contains a poem by Mary Austin titled, "I Have Known Poets."
