Description

Collection of 17 photographs taken at Beatty Nevada in 1905 according to George Cook, the photographer. This collection was given to George Cook's friend, Roy, on 11/04/1958. 1979.262.1--This is Beatty, Nevada taken in April 1905 when it was a tent city or a rag town as we used to call it. There was about 300 people there at that time. 1979.262.2--This is the main street of Beatty looking east from the main four corners where the hotel stands today as it was built by George Greenwood several years later after Beatty became a real town. The big tent at the right is the Montana Club, the big gambling house owned by Oke [Ike?] Burnstine. 1979.262.3--Looking west from the same corner on main street in Beatty you can see the hotel down the street. The tent on the right on the corner is Fred Doiser Saloon. 1979.262.4--The Montgomery Hotel built in 1905. Those autos came down from Tonopah and Goldfield the day of the dedication of the hotel in 1905. As you can see they have no doors or windshields so you got plenty of breeze and dust. No paved roads in those days. 1979.262.5--This is Jim Beatty. The town of Beatty was named after him as he had lived on this little ranch for 30 years before the Montgomery Mine was discovered. He was married to an Indian woman. 1979.262.6--Mr. Beatty ranch home and his three children. Mr. Beatty standing by the tree in the rear. 1979.262.7--The first Decoration Day in Beatty in 1905. Two old men, one was found dead in his tent and the other was thrown off a horse and killed. I helped to make the coffins for both of those men. 1979.262.8--This is the Smith Brothers ready to leave for Death Valley. One of the brothers was shot and killed by Johnie Cytil in 1908 over some mining claims. 1979.262.9--Street scene in Beatty, Nev. in 1905. The little baby burro is two days old that they are holding. 1979.262.10--One of the big teams that freighted from Los Vages [Las Vegas] Nevada to Beatty Nev. 125 miles. In 1905 it took them 30 days to make the round trip. 1979.262.11--Another one of the big teams that hauled from Las Vegas to Beatty. 1979.262.12--This is Rose and Palmer team leaving Las Vegas for Beatty Nev. in 1905. 20 animal team, Ira Moon used to drive this team. 1979.262.13--This is H. D. and L. D. Porter's team. Sye Johnson used to drive this team. After the railroad was built into Beatty he built a store there in 1907 or 1908 and he lived there until his death. 1979.262.14--This is George Cook camp, 25 miles north and east of Beatty. I am standing in front of my tent. The other two were there for about ten days, then they went back to Beatty. I was there for six months all alone. 1979.262.15--Indians gambling at Beatty Nev. in 1905. That is the way they lived out in the open. 1979.262.16--More of the Indians at Beatty. A young brave. Notice the shoes he has on. 1979.262.17--Indian women and children at Beatty Nev. in 1905. The clothes they have on is what the people threw away.
