Description

Black and white photo postcard of a twenty mule team hauling borax wagons in the desert. The side of the wagons (not entirely legible in this photo) say, "The original 20 mule team wagon used for hauling borax out of Death Valley for the Pacific Coast Borax Co." On the left hand side of the postcard there is this typed description: The 20 Mule Team Crossing Panamint Valley. The 20 mule team driven by Russ Spainhower left Lone Pine with "Bruce Morgan's group of '49ers" November 23, 1949 in a treck across Panamint Valley to Death Valley for the December Second Centenial. These big wagons with wheels that weigh over eight hundred pounds each, pulled by ten pair of mules driven with only a single "jerk line," travel at a speed averaging two miles an hour and require ten days to make the trip from Lone Pine to Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley National Monument, California. Frasher ID # F-8742.
