1975.58.5Description
Photo of 24 people (at least 9 are women and 2 are children) standing on the frozen aqueduct. Some of them are wearing ice skates. Two men are sitting on the ground and they both have sticks or canes (a women in the center also has a stick). Possibly playing hockey? One of the children is sitting on a sled.
The accession paperwork says this was taken in 1916 when the aqueduct froze over, but the caption from the book "Mountains to Desert" identifies this a December 1913 skating party on the newly completed Los Angeles Aqueduct (near Manzanar). Another photo in the museum gives the date as Christmas 1911.Collection
