Framed panorama photograph of Deep Springs Toll Station on Westgard Pass about 1913.
Information from an old museum label: Deep Springs Valley Toll Road. J.S. "Scott" Broder came to Big Pine from Aurora in 1860. His intent was to build a freight road through the White Mountains. In 1873 the road and the toll house were finished. He lived there and collected toll money for several years. By the early 1880s traffic decreased significantly due to the railroad. Broder lived at the toll house until his death shortly after 1900. This road is now California Highway 168, over Westgard Pass.
This item was mentioned in the May 23, 1968 "Round About the Museum" article. It says that this photo had been hanging in the Recreation Hall of the SCE Co. Plant 4. Bill Young of Bishop said the picture was taken in 1097, the auto is a 1907 Thomas and belonged to the Nevada California Power Co., now the SCE. The main office of the Power Co. was in Goldfield and once a week this trip was made from Goldfield to Owens Valey over the Deep Springs Valley Toll Road. He identifed the two men, employees of the Power Company, as C. O. Poole and Delos Chapell. A bewiskered old man to the right of the auto is unknown.
