Information on back: Mount Whitney. A state Geological Survey found, in 1864, that several peaks were higher than Mount Shasta, considered at the time the highest peak in the United States. For several years there was confusion as to which peak was Mount Whitney, named after the Survey's chief, Josiah D. Whitney. The first to reach the top of Whitney were a couple of local fishermen who christened the peak "Fisherman's Peak." A bill introduced into the state legislature wanted to legalize the name "Fisherman's Peak," but the governor refused to sign the bill, thus the name Mount Whitney.Collection
