Black and white photo of Inyo County Sheriff's posse escorting the inaugural trip of the Highway Post Office at Independence. Harold "Skinny" Gates is carrying the American flag. Sheriff Charles Cline directly in back of Gates. The Highway Post Office is parked in front of the Pines Cafe.
The Inyo County Sheriff's uniformed mounted posse met the Highway Post Office caravan a short distance south of Independence and escorted it to the Independence Post Office, thus depicting the era from the Pony Express to the present mode of transportation. Upon arriving at the Post Office, the Highway Post Office was on display and people had a chance to meet Mr. Pearson, Assistant Postmaster General, and other guests.
