Sheepherder Alfred Giraud standing next to a silo at the Schober Ranch in Round Valley, February 1965. The silo, built from Bishop Tuff quarried from the volcanic tablelands, was purported to be the oldest silo west of the Mississippi River. This is one of the few (or only?) silos built from quarried rock. Most silos were either constructed of wood or concrete. Note the steel cabling around the structure providing support.
