Description

Workmen shown concrete-lining a section of the Los Angeles River Aqueduct west of Owens Lake. Written along bottom, left side is "Los Angeles, Cal. A56." Stamped in black ink on reverse with Dept. of Water & Power stamp and photograph/negative number A-56. Written in red ink on reverse: Sec. I - No. 9 - No. 68. "Owing to the porous nature of the ground through which the ditch was built, it was necessary to concrete it. The side slopes were made flat (1 to 1) so that concrete could be placed without forms. The open lined section had a larger capacity then the unlined canal. This is to provide for the waters of mountain streams which are crossed by the Aqueduct." --from the LA Aqueduct Construction, Final Report, 1916, pg. 171. The open, lined section of the aqueduct ran from the Alabama Gates to North Haiwee Reservoir, a distance of 37 miles. [source?]
