Description

Electric dredge used to excavate the unlined section of the aqueduct in the Owens Valley. Dredge utilized power generated at Division Creek Power Plants No. 1 and No. 2. The location is the Independence area. The photographer was West Coast Art Co. Written in the lower left corner is "A81." There is a man standing on a plank on the left side of the dipper dredge. Stamped in black ink on reverse with Dept. of Water & Power stamp and photograph/negative number A-81. Written in red ink on reverse: Sec. I - No. 8 - Page 67. "Open, unlined section comprised 23 miles of Aqueduct Project and ran from the Intake to the Alabama Gates. It had a capacity of 800 sec/ft. and was 38' wide on the bottom and 62' wide on the water line. The constructed line is in the moist bottom lands of the Owens Valley where the prevailing elevation of groundwater plane is 2' to 4'. As the canal has an average depth of 10' it would have been difficult and expensive to line it with concrete because of this ground water. Moreover the canal will gain in flow rather than lose in passing through this division. Measurements show that 7 second feet of water is constantly seeping into this canal between the Intake and George's Creek (exclusive of the 23 second feet from Black Rock Springs)." --from the Final Report?
