Description

Steam shovel shown excavating a section of canal near Alabama Hills. Forms for lining are shown in left foreground. Stamped in black on reverse with Dept. of Water & Power stamp and photograph/negative number H-11. Stamped in green ink non reverse with "a photographic copy by Merge Studios" and an LA address. "The ditch in this division was excavated by power shovels. One electric shovel and several steam shovels were purchased. At places, granite boulders 10', 20', and even 30' in diameter were encountered in large numbers. Where deep side-hill cuts were encountered it was found advantageous to use two steam shovels in tandem, one working ahead of other, cutting down the upper half of the slope and throwing it down to the lower shovel." --from the LA Aqueduct Construction, Final Report, pg. 171. "Concreting was carried on immediately behind the shovels. An abundance of good gravel was obtainable from the ancient beach line of Owens Lake. The concrete lining on the sides was put on the 1 to 1 slopes in 6 foot section without forms, and the bottom floated with templates." --from the LA Aqueduct Construction, Final Report, pg. 173.
