Description

Collection of six color photos of Kennedy Meadows School from 1963-1964. 2023.36.1--Written in ink on reverse: Kennedy Meadows School, Dec. 1963. Dearest Bet, This picture shows (1) my trailer, (2) boys' outhouse, (3) redwood school house, (4) Greenbriar parked near it, (5)water tank in foreground, (6) flag on pole of lodge, pole pine, (7) incinerator. It's taken at noon and my pupils are off in adjacent rocks looking for spearpoints and Indian beads of which there remain many as the Paiute Indians used to camp and hunt here. Easter love to you and Loli, Polly and Dirck. 2023.36.2--Written in ink on reverse: "My Assistant." Kennedy Meadows Schoolhouse from rear. Jan. 1964. The shadow is produced by outhouse. 2023.36.3--Written in ink on reverse: Bureau of Land Management towed me out, 12 miles. In front of Kennedy Meadows School. Jan. 23, 1964. 2023.36.4--Written in ink on reverse: Oct. 1963. Pupils of Kennedy Meadows School at recess time. This building, short distance from school, is someone's pumphouse. Water not available to us tho it was hoped it would be. My lads love to be on top of things! 2023.36.5--Written in ink on reverse: Nov. 1963. I took this specially for you, Bet. Note their fascination with the man on horse. He was spotted a long ways off by Jude, from schoolroom window, and by time he'd reached school they'd burst out and surrounded him. Of course they all know each other, and Jack (on horse) has ridden into round-up his lost stray steers who pastured here all summer. About 11 AM, this incident occurred and school as to be temporarily dismissed. 2023.36.6--Written in ink on reverse: Incinerator, Jan. 23, 1964.
