Photo of aqueduct laborers working on a concrete lined section of Los Angeles Aqueduct in the vicinity of Owens Lake in the Olancha Division. The scaffolding allowed workers to compact the earthen fill sides of the canal. The Owens Lake is visible in the upper right side. Written in the lower left corner is "2356."
Stamped in black ink on reverse with the Dept. of Water & Power stamp and photograph/negative number 2356.
"The concrete lining on the sides was put on the 1 to 1 slopes in 6' sections without forms and the bottom floated in and formed with templates. The sides were plastered. Tufa cement from Haiwee was used on all this work. It was found necessary during the winter months, to carefully guard the concrete from freezing during the night. This was accomplished by heating in boilers, the water with which the concrete was made in order to take the chill off and to speed up the setting time of the concrete. After the warm concrete was placed, it was covered with 2" planks to retain the heat and prevent frost damage." -LA Aqueduct Construction, Final Report, pg. 173
