Description

Framed color portrait of Col. Sherman S. Stevens, artist unknown. Handwritten note nailed to back says: Oakland, Calif. Oct. 19, 1923. Photo of Dorothy's grandfather. This was taken in Paris in the year of 1856. Sherman Stevens. The father of Sherman Van Deventer Stevens. Old label: Colonel Sherman Stevens. Pioneer of the early days in Inyo. Built the Stevens Sawmill up Cottonwood Creek, 1873. Also built a "V" flume from the sawmill down the canyon to Owens Lake. The charcoal kilns were built on Owens Lake in 1877. The Stevens Ditch near Independence and running south for 15 miles was named for Colonel Stevens.
