Copy of a photo of the Camp Independence Hospital building (also called the Cartier House) after it was moved to Independence. H. Cartier purchased the Camp Independence Hospital building at auction in November 1883 for $290. It had been constructed at Camp Independence in the fall of 1872 after the earthquake destroyed all the adobe structures.
A typewritten piece of paper with the photo says: Residence corner of Kearsarge & Washington, Independence. Residence of Mrs. Dorothy C. Cragen said to be Fort Hospital--moved from fort when buildings were sold. (Disclaimed by Mrs. Ada Bell, please note photo also in this book of wind damaged house storm of Feb. 11, 1923. Built by H.
