Context

In 1921, the Ebell offered its younger recruits a new membership option, inviting them into the club through an auxiliary organization – the Ebell Juniors. Membership was open to the daughters and granddaughters of Ebell members between the ages of 19 and 23. They could remain in the Juniors at a reduced membership rate for up to 3 years before hopefully graduating to full Ebell membership. The age limit was raised to 26 in 1924, and then again in 1930 to 30. The Juniors could participate fully in Ebell activities, but they also formed their own departments, with Drama being a particular favorite. Many of the pieces in the present-day Costume Collection were used by the Juniors in their productions. In 1938, the Juniors collaborated with the Federal Theatre Project established under the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and staged a production of Pinocchio. Many of the social events and performances put on by the Juniors raised funds for their chosen causes. The Juniors focused on child welfare and education in their work with the Shriners Hospital for Children and children with disabilities. They also awarded scholarships through the Ebell Junior welfare fund, and they donated their time and efforts to the Los Angeles Girls’ Council, the Braille Institute, and Ebell Rest Cottage. They played an important role in the 1940’s war effort, organizing Red Cross first aid courses and bandage rolling parties. Ebell Juniors had official meetings once a month, and in addition to the dramatic performances they gave, their pursuits at the club included Book Chamber, athletics training and competitions, world affairs discussion groups, and fine arts studies. In 1934, membership reached an all-time high of over 200, and the Juniors were given their own department room to use for meetings, classes, or just socializing. They wrote about their activities in their own publication, “Ye Belles.”
