Scope and Content

Account book of Aaron Brown (1781-1870), 6.25" x 8" with leather binding and a green cover. Inside the front cover is the inscription: "Aaron Brown List, for 1830 - , A House 85 Acres of Land." On the first page is a handwritten note reading: "The Account Book of Aaron Brown for the year 1821, Groton, N.L., CT" The book includes accounts that have been written by at least two distinct people. It records purchases of farm produce and money owed for farm work (plowing gardens, mowing pastures, carting wood, etc.), 1822-1837. Many local family names appear including Allyn, Avery, Brown, Buddington, Fanning, Gallup, Gray, Leeds, Mason, Morgan, Packer and Wilbur.

Admin or Biographical History: Aaron Brown was born in North Groton on November 25, 1781, the son of Nathaniel and Deborah Morgan Brown. He inherited the Brown family homestead, located about a mile north of what is now known as Ledyard Center, and made his living as a farmer. He was also a veteran of the War of 1812, serving as a private in Capt. Stephen Billings' Company, Lt. Col. William Belcher's 8th Connecticut Militia Regiment of New London County. In 1807 he married Mary Wilcox Brown and the couple had seven children all born in North Groton (Ledyard Center: Robert, Eleazer, Allura, Laura, Sabrina, Theophilus and Champlain Jeffrey. He died in Ledyard November 3, 1870, just a few days shy of his 89th birthday.
