Admin or Biographical History: Capt. Charles Hewitt Smith was born May 8, 1790, the son of Joseph and Hannah Smith. He married Emma Stanton in Stonington on January 18, 1832. Emma died shortly after the birth of her first child on April 16, 1833 and Charles remarried Maria Stanton on February 28, 1837. Capt. Smith served in the Stonington militia during the War of 1812 and participated in the defense of Stonington Borough during the Battle of Stonington, August 10-12, 1814. He had a successful career as a master builder and later as a ships captain.
