Scope and Content

Collection of papers relating to Carl Ethan Akeley (1864-1926), a renowned naturalist, taxidermist, sculptor, inventor and explorer who concentrated his work in the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). He married Mary L. Jobe, explorer and founder of Camp Mystic, in 1924. Papers include an 1896 patent for an improved horse collar invented by Carl Akeley, a bibliography of articles written by or about Carl Akeley, copies of a letter written to Carl Akeley from Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson in 1914 and the Akeley memorial issue of "Natural History: The Journal of the American Museum" published March 1927 and entirely devoted to Akeley's life and work.
