Scope and Content

Diary of Thomas E. Packer (1827-1903), 6.25" x 8" with red, blue and green floral cover. Inside the front cover is a label reading: "The Property of Thos. Eldridge Packer; No. 1, Brandon, Mississippi." On the first page is a handwritten note reading: "T.E. Packer's Journal, Brandon, MI, January 1, 1853." Thomas Packer left Mystic, CT for Brandon, MI on September 14, 1852 in the company of Miss Eleanor Ashbey and Mr. & Mrs. Potter for a teaching assignment. The diary describes his experiences teaching at the Brandon High School (January - July 1853) and his return home to Mystic (July - October, 1853). These entries are interspersed with news about other Mystic residents, particularly deaths and marriages. Also includes 2 pages of notes from meetings of the 10th School Distict, August 1871, recorded by the clerk, Thomas E. Packer.

Admin or Biographical History: Thomas Eldridge Packer was born in Mystic in April 1827, the son of George and Delight Eldridge Packer. He made his living as a school teacher before founding the T.E. Packer Insurance Co. in Mystic. He also served as president of the Mystic Valley Water Co. Thomas married Emma Jane Burrows in Mystic on July 4, 1849. The couple had two children (Teresa Packer Grinnell and Addie Packer Waterman) and lived for many years at 7 Burrows Street, Mystic, CT.
