Provenance

Notes

Admin or Biographical History: The firm of Irons and Grinnell was a shipbuilding business established by Dexter Irons (1807-1858) and Amos Grinnell (1817-1880). The pair began building vessels together in Old Mystic before opening a shipyard at Pistol Point in Mystic in 1841. The record breaking clipper ship ANDREW JACKSON was launched from this yard in 1855. Following the death of Dexter Irons on May 25, 1858, Grinnell purchased the remainder of the shipyard from Irons' estate and went into business with Mason Crary Hill (1817-1905). The Hill & Grinnell yard was dormant from 1860-1864 as both partners were employed as naval inspectors for the US Government during the Civil War, but resumed operations in October 1864-1875.
