Black and white photograph negative, view of the first State Highway Bridge over the Thames River, c. 1920. The State of CT constructed a new railroad bridge across the Thames and converted the original railroad bridge (built 1889) into a highway bridge in 1919. The signs on the bridge read (left to right) "Speed Limit 20 Miles Per Hour Strictly Enforced," "Toll Bridge Pay Here" and "Pay Toll."Collection
