Description

Glass plate negative in envelope labeled "Worcester." Bow view of the Norwich Line steamship CITY OF WORCESTER sinking in the Thames River, May 29, 1898. Salvage vessels can be seen on both sides of the sidewheel steamer and several life boats have been launched. The steamer was headed from New London to Groton when it struck Cormorant Reef. Capt. T.A. Scott was involved in efforts to pump out and raise the boat. (2 plates with identical views)

Given to Carol Kimball (former Town of Groton Historian) by Bill Peterson (former curator at Mystic Seaport Museum). They were purchased from an antique dealer who claimed they came out of an old home in Mystic.
