Collection of papers relating to the Universal Peace Union and the annual Peace Meetings held in Mystic from the late 1860s through the early 1900s, 1875-1890.
*Land deed recording of the purchase of a parcel of land called "Fish's Grove" by Alfred H. Love, Aaron M. Powell, Belva A. Lockwood and Frederick E. Whipple on behalf of the Universal Peace Union, March 15, 1890. The land was purchased from Roswell A. Fish, Ellen Virginia Fish and located off River Road (at the present site of the Peace Sanctuary) and was put to use as a meeting site for an annual summer gathering of the Universal Peace Meeting. Prior to this purchase, the Peace Meetings occurred further north on River Road at a site known as "Burrows' Grove."
*Flyer, "Songs of Peace & Programme of the Connecticut Peace Society for the Annual Grove Meeting, Aug. 18th & 19th, 1880." Includes writings by Mystic residents Content Whipple, Zerah Whipple, Ida Whipple Benham, N. Frank Whittle and Julia Crouch.
*Broadside, biography of Julia Ward Howe, published by "The Cottage Hearth," Boston, April 1875. Julia was an American author known for composing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and a distinguished activist who advocated for women's suffrage and pacifism.
*Poem, "In the Days of Belva Lockwood. Year of 1884." 3 page typed transcription of a poem written by Nellie Denison and delivered at the organization of the Belva Lockwood Guards at Mystic River, 1884. Belva Lockwood was a founding member of the Universal Peace Union and ran for President of the United States in 1884. The poem references several Mystic residents including John Knight Bucklyn, Stephen Denison, George Burrows, William P. Bugbee, Ira Jackson, Roswell Brown, Albert Wolfe, Rollin Ketchum and Mason P.
