Photo negative, the SS DAKOTA on ways at the Eastern Shipbuilding Company, Groton, c. 1903. The vessel was built as a passenger cargo ship for the Great Northern Steamship Company and launched from Groton in February 1904. It ran aground and sank off the coast of Japan on February 17, 1907. The Eastern Shipbuilding Co. was established in Groton in 1900 and was in operation until 1907. The site was later used by the New London Ship and Engine Co. and General Dynamics/Electric Boat Co.
