Description

Berlin – c. 1900/1901 Improved version of the well-known “Ideal” phonograph with enclosed wooden motor housing Historical Background The Berlin-based company Czempin & Krug was one of Germany’s leading talking machine manufacturers around the turn of the 20th century. Their “Ideal” phonograph was known for solid engineering and precision manufacturing. The Model 1900/1 shown here represents the upgraded version of the original “Ideal.” The most notable change was the wooden motor housing, which protected the spring motor, reduced operating noise, and gave the machine a more elegant, furniture-like appearance. Technical Features & Construction Drive: Spring motor with hand-crank winding Cylinder format: Standard Edison wax cylinders (2") Reproducer: Precision recording and playback unit Cabinet: Sturdy oak base with mounted metal top plate Operation: Easy loading and changing of cylinders Significance The “Ideal II” participated in the major “Phonographic Competition” held in Berlin in February 1901 – a showcase of German and international phonograph technology. Due to its refined engineering, it was widely copied by other Berlin workshops. This model embodies the successful combination of industrial precision, technical advancement, and aesthetic design – a milestone in German phonograph manufacturing.
