A small collection of late 19th century paintings by Edward Martin Taber.

Edward Martin Taber (1863-1896) was an American landscape painter and writer. Taber was influenced by the paintings of European artists he saw in galleries while on a trip to Europe in his early twenties. He received little formal training, studying only briefly under artist Abbott Thayer in the winter of 1887-1888. Taber's ill health prevented him from continuing with Thayer, but he honed his artistic talents on his own, sketching frequently, and painting when his health allowed. Taber moved to Stowe, Vermont in 1888, hoping that the clean mountain air would help his tuberculosis. Vermont became the inspiration for his paintings and his writings, and Stowe became his primary residence. While Edward Martin Taber completed few paintings in his life, constrained by his health, he frequently sketched the people, landscape, and animals around him.

Taber exhibited his works at the Society of American Artists in 1886, 1893, 1894, and 1895, before becoming a member of the society in 1895. After his death in 1896, his works were posthumously exhibited at the St. Botolph Club in Boston and at the Art Students League of New York. His most famous work, "Mt. Mansfield in Winter", was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris, France, as part of an American display at the Grand Palais. It was later exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, as well as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Taber's observations on nature, as well as selections from his personal letters and poems, were compiled and edited by his sister, Florence Taber Holt, who had them published as the book "Stowe Notes" in 1913.

The aim of this digital collection is to create a more complete catalogue of Taber's works so that his legacy can be preserved online. If you have works by Edward Martin Taber or have questions, please contact me at kmsgarret@gmail.com.
