Historical Note

Note

While in Stowe, Vermont in 1889, Taber painted this portrait of his dog, Toby. In a letter to his friend and fellow artist, Joe Evans, he writes about painting Toby. "I have also painted a portrait of Toby, which I want you to see very much, as I have reached a point of painful uncertainty respecting the next thing to be done." (October 26, 1889 personal letter to Joe Evans). Taber often wrote Evans asking for his input on his works. Although due to Taber's ill health, he was isolated from other artists for most of his career, he stayed in communication with Joe Evans and Abbott H. Thayer.
