Model of a Kiva made by Sophia Baitzel. The model represents a Kiva, consisting of many rooms and a deep pit. The grid-like structure is made of a grey/white/pinkish-grey clay, with lots of exposed cracking. The area around the grid structure is covered by sand and dirt. The bottom of the pit is covered in sand and dirt as well.Use

Ascribed to the Puebloan culture of North America, it is suggested that kivas are used for both secular and ceremonial purposes. Kivas can be large or small, or built in the shape of an attached tower. They generally have a "sipapu", a large circular pit in the floor that represents the underworld.Collection
