Metallic Catrina Cutout

Name/Title

Metallic Catrina Cutout

Entry/Object ID

E-138

Description

A metallic violet cutout of La Catrina circa October 1987.

Use

La Catrina is one of the most recognizable figures of The Day of the Dead. The cutout was most likely used as decoration during the holiday. It might've adorned an altar that had offerings for the deceased spirits being honored.

Context

La Catrina is a popular symbol in Day of the Dead culture. She gained prominence when she was depicted by Mexican artist, Jose Guadalupe Posada. He drew La Catrina in a satirical manner as a way to say that despite materialistic, racial, or economic differences, everyone will end up the same; a skeleton since everyone is destined to die.
